About NameChangeMap

NameChangeMap.us is a 50-state procedural reference for legal name change in the United States. It covers court-petition procedure (including gender affirmation, divorce-revert, identity / cultural, marriage, post-naturalization, post-emancipation, minor name changes), publication-waiver procedure, and the after-court update sequence (SSA → DMV → passport → employer → banks → professional licenses → utilities → voter registration).

What this is

A free, ad-supported, affiliate-funded informational reference. We read primary state-legislature sources and state-court self-help materials and translate the procedural rules into plain English. Every state's page links back to the primary statute so you can verify what we say.

What this isn't

NameChangeMap.us is not a law firm. We do not provide legal advice. We do not represent you. Filing a name-change petition based on the information here is your choice; we encourage you to verify with the local court clerk or a licensed family-law attorney before filing. Statutes change — fees especially.

Editorial policy

Every reason for legal name change is treated with equal procedural depth. We do not lead any page with marriage. We do not frame gender-affirming context as an “edge case” or a “special section.” We do not use coded icons, coded color, or othering language for any reason. The full editorial policy disclosure lives at /methodology.

Reviewer attribution

Procedure researched from primary state-legislature sources. Independent family-law attorney review pending.

Per Google AdSense YMYL guidance, legal-information sites benefit from named expert review. NameChangeMap.us does not fabricate reviewers — when our independent family-law attorney reviewer is secured, this section will display real attribution (name, bar number, state of admission, LinkedIn URL).

Privacy posture

Audience-sensitivity is a hard constraint here. We use Google Analytics for aggregate page-view counts. We do not log which reason a visitor is researching, which combinations of pages they visit, or anything that could identify a specific case. Full privacy policy.
