Find a lawyer
Filing a name-change petition pro se (without an attorney) is allowed in every US state. Most uncontested adult petitions resolve without a lawyer. An attorney is helpful when:
- The case is contested (other parent in a minor case, creditor objection).
- You need a publication-waiver under a safety-concern statute and want help drafting the supporting motion.
- You have a complex underlying record (sealed prior records, pending criminal matter, federal witness-protection placement).
- You want the paperwork prepared and filed for you and the court appearance handled (where applicable).
Affiliate referral: LegalZoom
NameChangeMap.us refers visitors to LegalZoom for licensed family-law assistance. LegalZoom prepares and files the petition; the lawyer relationship and any court appearance are handled by independent licensed attorneys in your state.
Affiliate disclosure:when you engage LegalZoom through this referral, the partner network pays NameChangeMap.us a referral fee. This does not change the price you pay or the lawyer's independent professional duty to you.
Legal aid alternative
If you cannot afford a paid attorney, your local legal aid organization may handle name-change petitions for income-eligible petitioners — often at no cost. Many state bars also run modest- means or sliding-scale programs.
Court self-help office
Most state court systems run free self-help centers (in-person or online). They cannot give legal advice but can confirm forms, filing fees, and procedural steps for the local court. Per-state self-help links are on each state's page.
